le musée mer marine à Bordeaux

The Sea and Marine Museum (MMM)

Located in the heart of the old Bacalan district, and the Bassins à flots, a former shipbuilding and port activity site, the Musée Mer Marine (MMM), born in 2019, offers more than 7500 m2 of space The museum offers a wide range of exhibition space in a sublime building with clean architectural lines. The diverse collections and exhibitions bring together history, art and science, emphasizing the links betweeneople and the maritime universe: between fear and fascination.

Children will be attracted - among other things - by the a large number of old models of ships and deck objects made by the sailors during their long crossings. There are scientific objects, paintings, sculptures and art objects, but also charts and atlases characterizing the universal history of navigation, travel and discovery. Gathered in the permanent exhibition space, and beyond the horizons, an impressive variety of more recent ships are gathered and we content the modern epic: submarines, steamships ...

The Mer Marine museum is not ONLY about history! The second floor also aims to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our oceans and waterways, as well as the species that inhabit the marine world, and reminds us of their essential beauty, and their fragility. From the creation of the oceans to the observation of the world as it is today, the The Musée Mer Marine puts the spotlight on education for environmental protection while integrating in its course (realized with National Geographic) interventions of contemporary artists committed to this cause. Jhe young public and teenagers find alternative codes of reading that they know well and that happily complete the oceanographic approaches.

Our opinion on the Mer Marine museum

  • A modern and pleasant space in the Bacalan, an old district rehabilitated
  • A museum that really deserves a visit for ocean lovers and history enthusiasts
  • A varied pedagogy that will captivate the youngest and ... those who accompany them!

Planet or Plastic ? The exhibition event (from June 8, 2023)

  • This exhibition, mounted in partnership with National Geographic traces the history of plastic since its creation in the 19th century. Starting from a noble intention which was that of replace elephant ivory slaughtered for their tusks, John Wesley Hyatt, invented celluloid
  • The exhibition takes us into the applications and revolutions created by plastic and the devastating effects of this material on the oceans, the environment, the fauna and flora, but also on humans
  • Photography is widely used to show - sometimes in a shocking way - the realities of this pollution, and are signed by great photographers recognized as much for their artistic talent as for their involvement in the defense of the environment.

The exhibition ends on a hopeful note, for a more sustainable and responsible world by mentioning solutions such as awareness campaigns, banning non-recyclable products and individual and collective actions. So, Planet or Plastic?
